The biggest problem that occurs with backing gates is that they get used too hard to push the cows up, causing damage to backing gates and possible derailment.
They are not designed to be used as a bulldozer, they are designed to move cows up gently.
Every year they should be serviced.
For rectangular yard backing gates
Rope
- Rope changed and tied correctly
Wheels
- Wheels have tread on them and replaced if need be
- Wheel covers are in place for protection and are firmly mounted
- Gearboxes
- Check for oil leaks
- Tighten mounting bolts
Pulleys
- Are in good working order
Electronics
- The electronics are working properly
- The switch buttons have correct labels that are visible
Nylon Rollers
- Replace faulty ones
- Make sure spacing is correct
- Check the catenary wire is in good condition
Dungbuster and or yard cleaning systems
- Check filter
- Check blades are in good condition
- Check for cracks in booms
- Check nozzles
- Check hoses
Winch
- Check the winch is working properly and not dropping down
General Repair
- Check for welding repairs
- Grease
Service

Electrics
- Check the electrics are in good order – use a certified electrician
Wheels
- Replace any worn wheels
- Check the axles
Water driven
- Check the paddles are in good working order
Oil
- Replace oil in the gearboxes

- Check that the cleaning system is in good working order
